Pro-Lincoln Cartoon.
This pro-Lincoln Cartoon was created by Louis Maurer in 1860 just weeks before the 1860 elections. Louis Maurer was born in Germany and migrated to New York City in 1851. The message of this cartoon is to show that Lincoln is the best choice to run America. Louis Maurer predicted Abraham Lincoln’s victory over his opponents John Bell, John C. Breckinridge, and Stephen A. Douglas. The cartoon is based around baseball because during this period of time baseball was relatively new.

Pro-Lincoln Cartoon.
This pro-Lincoln cartoon is named "The Coming Man's Presidential Career, à la Blondin" and was created by a northerner named Jacob Dallas in the Harper's Weekly, Aug 25, 1860, p. 544. The point of this cartoon is to show even though Lincoln went through many struggles during his running for president he overcame them and stayed a strong leader. In this cartoon Lincolns face looks strong and determined because it adds to the point that he is a strong leader and hardworking. In the artist’s view, the Republican party’s stance on slavery is a burden on Lincoln’s shoulders when he was trying to win the presidential election. The U.S. Constitution, however, is Lincoln’s balancing rod that keeps him steady and allows him to reach his goal. This cartoon would appeal more towards northerners because they wanted Lincoln to be president in opposite of the south who didnt want him to be president.

Anti-Lincoln cartoon.
This cartoon was created by an anti-Lincoln satirist named Adalbert J. Volck in 1862. Adalbert J. Volck lived in Baltimore, Maryland and support the confederacy army during the American Civil War. The message Volck is trying to make with this disturbing cartoon is that Lincoln was not a good guy. This cartoon was made by the view of republicans in the South and upsetted the northern democrats. All the chaos going on in this cartoon represent the war and how unsettling America was. On the platform in middle of the cartoon it has words that the cartoonist believes describe Lincoln. The words say Puritanism, Atheism, Rationalism, Socialism, Free Love, Spirit Rapping, and Negro Worship. Though all these accusations are ridiculous this sort of nonsense is represented today. Many people claim our president now to be many things such as atheist or muslim.

Anti-Lincoln cartoon.
This cartoon is named “Bright Goings On” by an unknown cartoonist in the British humor magazine Fun on Nov 12, 1864, p.84. This cartoon shows John Bright shaking hands with a militaristic half-wit Abraham Lincoln stepping on the Constitution. This cartoon would appeal to southerners and british citizens who dont like America but would anger Northerners. This cartoonist drew Abraham Lincoln in a unflattering matter because this is how this British humor magazine viewed Lincoln. This cartoonist viewed Lincoln as a militaristic person who wasn't so bright. The fallen man in the cartoon’s background is assumed to be Confederate President Jefferson Davis or Uncle Sam.
